Mauler “missed the second title chance – Aftonbladet

Alexander Gustafsson did not manage to take the world champions from Daniel Cormier.

The Swede UFC star missed his new shot at the title after five grueling rounds and split verdict.

– Gustafsson has made me a better fights, man …. it was this warrior I had expected, acclaimed Cormier his opponent afterwards.

It was an entertaining match a bit in the style of the classic title brawl at light heavyweight between Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson in 2013.

Unfortunately, it ended in the same way for Gustafsson now as then – with a title dream up in smoke.

Daniel Cormier began strongly with his wrestling skills and got into a monster lift directly in the first round Gustafsson was pressed long in the back.

“could not see”

In round two got “Mauler” several strokes and a takedown that equalized the match. When Daniel Cormier became groggy the “Maulers” well-placed knee in the end of the third round got the Swede his chance.

– I could not see the whole round, said Cormier about the meeting.

Gustafsson did not manage to use its momentum and the reigning champion, who was the more aggressive throughout the match, was able to come back and ride out the storm in rounds four and five.

Both Cormier and Gustafsson raised his arms above his head after five rounds long match. A judge had Gustafsson victorious with a score of 48-47, while two were the American winners (48-47, 49-46).

– He’s a good boxer, he was once a real champion, said disappointed Gustafsson.
