“The biggest drop in the Dutch football history was given a fitting end,” wrote the Algemeen Dagblad, which is difficult to explain why national team plummeted so sharply.
“In 15 months, the World Cup third-place turned into a hopelessly messy concoction and it needed an army of psychologists and space scientists to find an exact explanation for it.”
The newspaper De Volkskrant considers the explanation may be that Louis van Gaal, who led the team in the World Cup last year, got the players to look better than they were:
“He squeezed everything out of the players, but the successors Guus Hiddink and Danny Blind has not managed to get them to surpass themselves. “
It is the first time since 1984 that the Netherlands miss the European Championships.
