He hopes for even more audiences in Gothenburg – Expressen

Martin Strömberg’s favoritmålgångar

Auckland, New Zealand

“There are lots of sailing history. America’s Cup have been there, New Zealand is one of the largest sailing nations. People know what is coming to town, it is everyone talking sailing everywhere. Lots of people encounter. “

Newport, Rhode Island, United States

” Even more people than in Auckland. So many boats out so that it sometimes was hard to breathe because of the smell of diesel. Although it was dark, it was sometimes like daylight because of all the bright lights directed toward the boats. “

Gothenburg, Sweden

” I have not sailed in there yourself. But I have a strong recollection from the competition in 2001 when the boats came in the middle of the night. As I remember, it was still more people out in boats and on land that time than when we came to Newport. I’m really looking forward to finish at home in Gothenburg. “

Lots of people were out and met Stage victorious Dongfeng outside Newport 30 mil northeast of New York.

But göteborgske crewman Martin Strömberg hope for an even larger audience celebration after the final stage.

– I hope it gets even more people when we sail into Gothenburg. It’s important to stay focused all the way in until we see the opera, he says.

Although it was dark when the Volvo Ocean Race boats came to the US East Coast yachting mecca of Newport at ten o’clock on Wednesday evening, local time, there was lots of people out and met in private boats.

The greatest accolades received Dongfeng who won the stage and thus ensured that the contest alive ahead of the final three stages.

– We picked up some points in Abu Dhabi. We are in the game and keeps hope alive, says Martin Strömberg.

Three stages remain

After mastering the crime of Dongfeng on the fifth stage was verging on the need for a victory on the sixth between Brazil and Newport.

– Although we are approaching the final goal in Gothenburg are many points left to fight for. So far there have been six stages in seven months, now there are three stages left in barely two months, said Martin Stromberg.

Are you happy with the competition so far?

– Yes, apart from the fifth stage when the mast broke. On the other, we have been on the podium each time, he said.

The finish outside Newport, a classic sailing center where among America’s Cup was settled for many years, was surprising. Although it was dark, it was full of people everywhere.

– They gave themselves really into the competition for the best reception. Auckland, New Zealand, with all its sailing tradition, normally it is perhaps best stop. But Newport’s reception was fantastic, says Martin Strömberg.

Had a good hamburger

Lots of boats were out and met.

– There were so many boats that it was difficult to sail and hard to breathe with all diesel smell from marine engines. But it was an experience to remember, says Gothenburg sailor.

Now it’s ten days of rest, mostly on land, before next Sunday wearing the road to Europe. Lisbon in Portugal and the French Lorient are the last stops before the boats are expected to sail into the net in Gothenburg 21 June.

When the boat is still in Newport will be a few days of recovery before the preparations for the next phase kicks off.

– Nice to eat real food, after we finished the race, I ate a really good hamburger. And tonight we’re going out to eat with the team to celebrate victory. It becomes something other than the freeze dried food we often eat on board, said Martin Stromberg.

Want to see Opera

Even more he longs to pass VINGA and sail into the harbor. Ideally, in the lead.

– I have a target in front of me. The image was strengthened after the race here in Newport. With so much people as it probably will we really be sure to keep the focus until we see the opera and to pass the finish line, he said.
