The goalie Johan Gustafsson, 23, has already won the gold with Roger Rönnberg. Now the duo reunited – in Frölunda.
Time for a golden replay?
It is sweaty bodies in Frölunda’s gym. Oscar Fantenberg throw away the wet bangs, note that as well as not anybody soft start dealing when Pär Edlund manages fysträningen.
– We will become stronger, faster, more agile and more resilient. There are many players that have a lot to improve, says Edlund decided.
Many have becoming tan, just returned home from holidays in Spain, Turkey, the United States or Thailand. And Frölunda actually looks much bigger in some places …
– Oh, it’s just less shirts this year, grins Anton Blidh.
– Though I am better trained now, more muscle. And I have a whole summer for me to become even stronger, says artturi lehkonen.
There is also a new face in the gym.
Johan Gustafsson, 23, is Frölunda’s new goalkeeper. The guy from Koping went via Luleå Hockey Minnesota Wild, but never got to stand a single match in the NHL for two seasons. The first season, he was sitting on the bench – and at least smell the fragrance of the world’s best league.
But then it just became the AHL with Iowa Wild – and even the lower league ECHL, with the team Alaska Aces. It was the show’s worst teams – and ended up with the right lousy statistics for “JG”, as he is called.
– I do not blame it. There were certainly plenty of things I could have done better … but it is an explanation for my statistics are not so good.
One thing that was missing was Goalkeeping.
– It is actually one of the reasons that I come home. It might work one or two seasons on their own – but now it is something that I want to, says Johan.
Roger Rönnberg also know what he will get in Gustafsson. Just remember räddningarna from the JVM – when Sweden won gold at the latest.
– Johan has been the first choice, all the time. Now we are very strong at the goalkeeper side, said Roger Rönnberg.
But there is no outspoken one among goalkeepers this year either. Gustafsson will have to fight for place with Lasse Johansson, who was brilliant in the playoffs.
– I want to stand all the matches, but ask Lasse Johansson, so he says the same thing. When I played in Luleå so I shared and David Rautio of the matches. I still want to grow and become better – and I can be here!
A peculiar detail, however. There is no lease on Gustafsson. Not yet anyway.
– Out of respect for John’s employer, we have not gone out with the lease. He is under contract with the Minnesota June 30 – and we see first of all that he plays next season with us. Though happy more years, said general manager Christian Lechtaler.
And yet it is not finished enlisted in Frölunda.
– There are no vacancies before the squad is full. It involves a back and a forward, possibly two, says Lechtaler – confirming that the club met AIK’s mega talent Robin Kovács.
– We are well situated in the planning, says Lechtaler.
Johan Sundström from the New York Islanders bought the apartment in Gothenburg – but other than that no contract ready. At least not ready to present.
It may be that even in Sundström’s case, that he is under contract until June …
