Tefu Mashamaite was elected to the South African league’s best player last season. Now he has signed for Hacken.
The center-back Tefu Mashamaite turns 31 years old this autumn, has made eight appearances for South Africa and was team captain in Johannesburg club Kaizer Chiefs, who plays in the highest league, the last few years.
On Wednesday, he signed a two-and-a-half year contract with Hacken.
– There is a good football player, with good feet , a really good head player with a strong personality in his homeland. He was elected to the league’s best player last season, says Häcken’s sporting director Sonny Karlsson.
The league’s best, how is it that such players end up in Sweden?
– I do not really know why, he has heard of us. I saw an interview with Diego Lugano, where he said that Sweden is a good country. It may be sufficient.
The central defender Lugano disappeared after the hedge when the league made the break in early June. Now, therefore, a new center-back into the squad, who like Lugano captained properties.
– I would hardly say it but this is a better soccer player than Lugano. But it is clear that this has a basis in that he has been captain of Kaizer Chiefs. He has also taken university courses.
The hedge has eight, nine defenders in the squad already, which primarily Emil Wahlström, Simon Sandberg, Jasmin Sudic and Tom Soderberg can take care of the center-back positions.
So why recruit a central defender?
– We have not gotten started Tom Söderberg properly, Simon Sandberg played as right-back … But a left-footed center-back, always looking for. None of our central defenders, except Tom, want to play to the left. We could not help it when we got the chance. This is not a short term thing, says Sonny Karlsson.
Tefu Mashamaite must have a work permit to play.
– He’s not here yet, but will come as soon as the possible. We have written to all that the transition on Wednesday, but it takes some time before he is ready for play. A work permit usually takes three to four weeks.
