Bergström: Sarah is suffering from gold fever – Aftonbladet

Netanya, Israel. She won again! Now we have enough to make a diagnosis of Sarah Sjöström.

If we dig ourselves down to the bottom of the Swedish swimming history and forth we notice soon what the 22-year-old has suffered.

Sarah the ultimate gold fever.

A wet Sarah Sjostrom of nedkasade shoulder standing in front of me and puffing.

– I’m surprised. It seems that I can improve myself quite a lot when I get to a final. It’s very nice to see for myself. It shows that you are mentally strong.

The analysis is quick and breathless. Sarah will be just up on the top step of the podium for the second time here in Israel. She has swum staggering back and we’ll look up a pyttesak to criticize it is her inability to tip the swimming.

Surprised?

Do not be final discharge, we just saw exactly what Sarah Sjostrom mastered to perfection?

Even with the world record

The signs appeared this morning.

After bragdguld and European Championship woke Sarah Sjostrom up to a quiet Friday morning. Eight of the eleven teams would be further from the women’s relay in freestyle, which for Sweden was as challenging as putting a niobitars puzzle.

The race proceeded smoothly. Sarah Sjostrom drummed their way through its third stretch, Sweden came second in the race behind Russia, and it was only when times were listed that we understood what we just saw.

Sarah had swum 23.3. A few hundred parts from the current world record.

While the sisters Hansson and Magdalena Kuras stayed for interviews Sjostrom trudged past us reporters. She would swim and then leave the stubborn cross draft in the icy swimming pool.

The wings of eagles to arms

A few hours later, she had loaded on to the European Championship finals in the double distance. Sarah had the second best time in the semis in the 100 meters freestyle, but ranomi kromowidjojo distance was six fearsome tenths.

– She looked completely calm this morning when she came into the net and I was exhausted. It is quite far down to the golden times but I can in any case be involved and fight for the medals, Sjostrom said after the race.

We will pause there for a second. Before outlining the finale is the time to break in with a basic course in Sarah Sjöström.

The first lesson: Since his breakthrough as a 14-year-old butterfly stroke have been her natural discipline.

Other: The broad shoulders and örnvingarna to arms is favored by long runway where physics gives more rash than the technology.

Third: At the age of 22 has Sjostrom matured mentally and improved during watering swimming and twists .

And a fourth lesson which is really more important than the other three: Sarah is good at winning. It sounds so very simple, but what should I write then?

Can not be a coincidence

In her career she has had success (seven world records, seven World Championship gold) and adversity ( not many apart from the Olympic kitty 2012), but eyes we medals we see that not only sparkles much, but it mostly do it in gold.

Individually had Sarah Sjöström 24 medals at European and World Championships before the final hundred meters free. 16 of them were gold. Two of the three times she is at the forefront of the finals so she wins. It is a pattern that has been repeated so many times in freestyle and butterfly, in the short and long course, I do not see it as a coincidence.

Something bursting into Sjöström when medals are at stake. Call it vinnarskalle or competition devil if you want, I call it gold fever.

Catch up already at 40 meters

I devoted the afternoon to place Sarah Sjostrom deed beside the Swedish predecessors. As the 22-year-old has no Olympic medals, she can not yet compete with Gunnar Larsson, Bengt Baron and Michael Phelps will breeze. Nor is the amount of medals – 36 – against Therese Alshammar who have the double.

But in a column stand Sarah Sjostrom out. She wins gold more often than the others. A quarter of Josefin Lillhages individual medals are of noble rank, Anna-Karin Kammerling is a third. Arne Borg, Alshammar and Frölander is up around 50 percent. Sarah is stable between 60-70 percent.

Are you tired of theory?

Should we give figures life and describe what we anticipated at the European Championship finals in the 100 meters freestyle?

Sarah Sjostrom lined up on the starting platform next ranomi kromowidjojo. They appeared in parallel, but the Dutch won as expected a few meters until the first turn. But unlike the trials and semis shrank lead on the second leg. At 40 meters was Sarah Sjostrom up, at 50, she was gone. Already there, she had taken more than a half-second of his time in the semis.

The Swede held the lead up to last turn, forces seemed to run out at the finish line, she felt like she was standing still. Looking to the Dutch in the path beside squeezed Sarah Sjostrom until his last energy and slid into the net as European champion.

The scoreboard showed that Ranomi in the main race rose by two tenths. Sarah sank six.

It’s crazy.

And the disease has a name.
