Kristian Karlsson was the lowest ranked of their group in the European Top 16 in table tennis in Gondomar, Portugal. The Swede did not.
The 24-year-old won the first against Robert Gardos, Austria, 3-0 in sets and then defeated home player Marcos Freitas, tredjeseedad in the tournament, in a night thriller with setsiffrorna 11-9 , 12-10, 8-11, 11-9.
But it did not matter that it was losing to German Bastian Steger. Karlsson is ready for the quarter-finals against Austrian Stefan Fegerl on Saturday.
Just Fegerl destroyed Pär Gerells chance for advancement. Gerell began with defeat against Vladimir Samsonov, Belarus, won in straight sets against Frenchman Adrien Mattenet and needed 3-1 in sets against Fegerl in the final group round.
It looked good in the close to two sets. Gerell won the first with 11-5 and had the grip on the other. Then it collapsed. Fegerl turned to 11-9, leveling the score to 1-1 and then won sets three and four on the fly, 11-5, 11-7.
