Swedish gold and bronze in World Cup sprint – Östgöta Correspondent

Jonas Leandersson gold had the plan ready – to go out hard and improve. In cases there was a clear lead for the 25-year-old, brought up in Karlstad Club OK Tyr but nowadays contestants for Sodertalje-Nykvarn. The low start number meant a long wait in målfållan.

It is clear that the nervousness rises the longer I was left standing in målfållan. When it was just Jerker (Lysell) left so I could just stand and enjoy it to be Swedish Championship, says Leandersson to the Swedish Orienteering Federation website.

Small margins

The Swiss Martin Hubmann was close but had to settle for the silver, 1.9 seconds behind Leandersson.

Yannick Michiels was stumbling close – literally – to challenge Leandersson. But Belgian stumbled on a fence in the final stages of the race and finished fifth.

In the end, remained only a threat to Leandersson. And it came from teammate Saturday’s sprintstafett, jerker lysell. Like Leandersson went Lysell also out hard and grew. But a small detour to one of the last checks made Lysell had to settle for bronze, 4.5 seconds behind his compatriot.

The medal was Lysell first in the World Cup context.

Other World Championship gold

Leandersson have World Championship medals before, including gold in the relay at last year’s World Cup. But the individual had before Sunday’s gold feat at best become bronze in the sprint two years ago.

I have been incredibly nervous in recent days. Mostly because of that everything has worked out so well this year and my expectations raised. It is really only yesterday that I could enjoy that it was the World Cup. I had a little revenge from sprint yesterday (in which Sweden was fifth then Lysell and Leandersson impressed second- and third distance).

I’m glad I held up the race in the best way. It then handed all the way feel quite sick.
