slush made it virtually impossible for anyone to snatch away from the other competitors. Johan Olsson tried. Anders Sodergren tried. Without success.
It was, as expected given the weather, decisively into the stadium. Czech veteran Lukas Bauer had grip for a smart ski replacing five kilometers before the finish and was challenged by Russian Maxim Vylegsjanin and Johan Olsson. Then found Petter Northug way up through the field and sprinted past Olsson at the last hill up to the horseshoe.
Then there was no snack.
Northug found cover between Vylegsjanin and Bauer and stumbled past. Simple, impressive and took his fourth gold in Falun, his 13th world championship gold medals in total.
Thus, he VM king. No one else has the same spurtfömåga as Norwegian, who had major advantage of the snowfall when no one was able to pull away.
Johan Olsson had set their sights on gold, but had to settle for bronze. He passed medal last few meters when Vylegsjanin lost his balance.
The Swedish hindsight in the World Cup ends with nine medals, the best result ever in a World Cup.
Olsson has saved the Swedish gentlemen with gold in the 15 km free, super stretch in the relay and bronze in femmilen.
Northug is one of history’s biggest skiers. After the gold in the sprint, sprint and relay, he is now the gold which in a sense is the greatest: in the classical femmilen.
The World Cup has been a great festival with over 230 000 visitors. That’s what I take
