Last year’s finalist Maria Sjarapova is on the Australian Open tennis after destroying the American Lauren Davis in the third set.
The fifth-seeded Russian won by 6 -1, 6-7, 6-0 in two hours and 14 minute match. She is now a step closer to a meeting with arch rival Serena Williams.
But first she must overcome the twelfth-seeded Belinda Bencic, Switzerland, who became the first female players on to the quarter final after victory against Ukranian Kateryna Bondarenko. Bencic lost the first set but managed to get back and win 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 in Friday’s opening match in Melbourne.
Bondarenko saved two match points in a thrilling finish but hit the third in the network and the Swiss teenager could win.
