Eighth-seeded Venus Williams out of Australian Open. British Johanna Konta beat the American superstar with 6-4, 6-2.
Venus Williams was appointed damtennisens comeback player in 2015 when she won three titles and climbed back into the top ten. Her 69th Grand Slam tournament was however an abrupt end in the very first round against Konta, which this year is the Australian Open for the first time.
Bitwise showed Williams his best game but it was not enough the 24-year-old, who became a British citizen as late as 2012.
Third-seeded Garbine Muguruza of Spain won convincingly over Estonian Anett Kontaveit in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4. It took just 60 minutes for Muguruza, one of the largest new rising stars in 2015, to win the game.
