To increase the chances to stage the World Handball Championship in 2023, Sweden has teamed up with Poland. Gothenburg can become one of gaming resorts.
– They have registered interest and is on track, says Steve Lewis.
The old superstar Lövgren is now CEO of Swedish handball team AB. As late as 2011, Sweden held a World Handball Championship for men – but it might be the last time we did it as a single host.
– It is set higher and higher demands from the international handball federation and to meet the requirements better, we seek together with Poland.
Why Poland?
– First, they were one of the countries that have applied to stage, just as we are. And somewhere along the way we started looking at how we could Transform us to meet the competition from its main competitors. We have always had a good relationship with Poland, and when we heard us, it turned out that they thought the same lines.
Poland have searched the World Cup at the last two occasions, but failed. The hope is to get help from the more experienced Sweden, while Lövgren and his colleagues believe they can take advantage of the very fact that it is “Poland’s luck.”
The countries share arrangement teaches becoming more common in the future. World Cup 2019, for example, be decided in Denmark and Germany. A stronger organization, better economy and better attendances are some of the reasons that countries getting together.
– There will of course be two groups with one team in each – and a neighboring nation. It makes it much easier to fill stadiums and create a handball party. It
The group stage will thus be divided equally between Sweden and Poland, as well as the fourth round. Regarding the semifinals and finals, it is still unclear which country will host. The experience of the World Cup in Germany and Denmark will be indicative.
– In addition, we do not know today what are the new arenas of eight years, so it may be a later issue. The important thing is that we and Poland have common views on to stage together.
What are the odds that we get World Cup matches in Gothenburg?
– It is too early to speculate. Gothenburg is of course one of the regions that have declared their interest and they are on track. Then we’ll see what parts of the championship as yesterday was, says Steve Lewis.
Next year arranges Sweden Championships for ladies – with the finals in Scandinavium. Men’s European Championships in 2020 settled in Sweden, Norway and Austria, with the final game at Tele2 Arena in Stockholm.
If Sweden and Poland will host the World Cup in 2023 decided on June 4 this year. Motkandidaten is Hungary.
