IFK icon on the joke with Stromberg: Took months before the smell disappeared – Göteborgs-Posten

Wondering what also celebrated sporting profiles of yesteryear doing now? In GP racing series What are you doing today? we pick up contemporary heroes to light again. The next profile to be interviewed Jerry Carlsson.

Jerry Carlsson came to Gothenburg and Blåvitt 1975 from Oskarshamn. When he left the club eleven years later, he had played 535 matches for the club, the third highest ever. Along with twin brother Conny, he was part of the gold team in the UEFA Cup in 1982. 30 years after the football career ended ringing the GP him up.

How is the situation?

– It’s so good.

What are you doing today?

– I am 63 years now and now I’m doing nothing really, more than to be retired. I got retirement from the bank last September, when it was official. I have worked at SEB since I came from Oskarshamn in 1975. So I was just over 40 years in the bank.

You were loyal both on and off the pitch.

– It becomes so when no one wants another one. Then you get to stay.

Why did you start working at the bank?

– It was above all to the chairman at the time, Bertil Westblad, was staff director at the bank. There were several players who started working there. It was my first real job in principle.

What was your role?

– The past twenty years, I worked with financing for rental properties. I have basically done everything in the bank. The first years I sat at the counter.

What is a typical day like for you?

– I sleep quite a while, to eight, half past eight. Then I read the newspaper and take breakfast. Then I go to the gym for a while, or I’ll take my wife and a walk. It is not so much this time of year.

How has your life changed since you became a pensioner?

– The only thing I did that was different when I retired was that I started to play golf. It’s a good job, and quite funny too. When the track opened in March there will be a lot of golf, about three times a week. I just need to learn properly.

What about it?

– Pretty good. I get away the ball anyway.

What’s your handicap?

– I got down to 30. I am completely satisfied with it. This year I must 20. It is always good to have a goal.

Are you active in football in some way?

– No, I’m not, not a bit. Not more than I watch football and practicing with IFK Gothenburg Oldboys on Saturdays. I was the coach a year in Torslanda in the 80s. But it was not funny. They never did as they said. Since then I have not had a job in football.

Your brother Conny has a long managerial career. Why did you have such different ways?

– Yes, he has been to many places and traveled around. It has been both good and bad. He thought it was funny, I guess. But there was nothing for me.

What was the plan that you would do for a career when you played?

– The plan was to work full time at the bank, something else was not. I had already been working there for ten years, so it was just to continue.

How you liked the bank?

– It’s been perfect. I am not going to complain. It was a great employer during my active time and even afterwards.

What differences did you encounter when you went from being a footballer to be working full time at the bank?

There was not much difference really. I worked almost full time when we played well. We trained only in the evenings and then had to leave for travel and training.

How do you see the fact that you had the job while you played?

– I do not think it’s good to work simultaneously. It would have been great to have it as they have it today, to be able to devote himself full-time to anything. But it went pretty well at that time anyway.

Can you be bitter because the money was not as big then?

– Bitter is not. It is good for those who play today that they get paid. We basically had nothing. I think we got 40,000 was when we won the UEFA Cup, before tax.

What made you so good?

– We had a good coach, a good mix of old and young, and players who complemented each other. We were a good bunch who had fun even on the side.

The team is known for his practical jokes. What were the rudest happened?

– I have heard many stories. I was one of them who was the most moderate and was not involved in that. That was Glenn and Torbjörn constantly kept on with that. But one of the most serious was when Glenn would sell his car. De la fermented herring in it when he would display. It took months before the smell disappeared from the car. He was allowed to keep it.

Welded jokes together team?

– Yes, it was funny. Everyone took it easy. I do not even Glenn became acidic.

Was it the same atmosphere at the bank?

– No, I can not say. Sana practical jokes before will probably not otherwise.

Do you have any contact with the team now?

– Some I meet on Saturdays at Oldboys-training sessions. Now, some filled sixty and then we met at a party.

Who celebrated last?

– It was probably Wernerson (Thomas red.anm) last autumn, I think. Then fill Fredriksson (Stig) sixty spring. Then there’s none left except Hysen (Glenn) and Corneliusson (Dan). They are clean ungpojkarna.

Who is the best at Oldboys-training sessions?

– There is not any. It is best to drink coffee.

Are you following IFK Gothenburg today?

– Yes, I’m basically at every home game. It can be a fun year this year. It was ignominiously at the end of last year.

Do you see a player who is similar to you as a player in this year’s team?

– No, I do not think . But I like the Dane, Mads Albeak. He has a great left foot. It was a shame that they sold Gustav Svensson. The type of player is not there really.

How would you describe yourself as a player?

– I was the one who ran much of the middle and tried to take care if that is not Stromberg took care of. I was a ball vinnartyp with decent passing game.

How do you see the IFK’s financial situation?

– They have invested healthy the last few years. But will not be out in Europe it will be so here. Then it has not managed to sell players to the extent they had anticipated. Then you just have to save up again. You know what you get every year. It’s pretty easy to figure.

Do you find it strange that it has become like this?

– A little strange to get to like it. You know what the revenue is so it can not be that hard to figure out what you can afford to pay.

What it means for the club to Comrade farm is sold?

– I do not think it matters so much. The owners are blue and white supporters. But of course it would have been better to have it. Now the situation as it was so it was not much else to do.

Have you ever been asked about having any role in the society?

– No, there are probably better knowledge of it. It is not for me. I’m not the type who wants to be there. There is too much fuss around it. It’s fun to sit there when it goes well, but in times like these, it is not very fun.

It was not easy to find news about you on the internet. Is that a conscious choice that you have stepped out of the limelight?

– I’ve always been that Lugne who want to stay in the background. I was never the one who was the first to nothing. It has followed throughout life. I was just glad I got to be with and play.

What was the best thing that happened last year?

– That I had to retirement. That was the big thing that happened.

What are you most looking forward to in 2016?

– A gold Blåvitt would be perfect. It’s time now. Otherwise, I’ll be glad I’m healthy at this age.

But now you are fully fit?

– Yes, for the phase. So far, I have no ailments.

As you look back in the 80s, which was the best match Blåvitt played?

– The most important was anyways Valencia gone (quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup in 1982 red.anm). It may have been the best too. It was the first match and we were 2-2 away. After that, we came to a packed Ullevi. It was probably the most important match in the history Blåvitts. There was no money in the association then.
