“Talked to Zlatan yesterday”
Inside the Friends Arena catacombs confirmed the 58-year-old on Monday that the European Championship finals in France this summer will be his last.
– I have made the decision to quit as national coach when my contract expires after Euro. It is a decision that matured last year. I had actually decided before the play-off matches against Denmark, but when I told my closest colleagues and wife after the last Danish-game, they thought I would give some thought to. So when the team traveled to Dubai on January 2 I had been thinking clearly. Then there was no doubt, says Hamrén and continues:
– I have had the Swedish football’s finest and best jobs for nearly 6.5 years and it has been a fantastic time. It’s not over yet. At least seven internationals remains so we are really looking forward to the European Championship this summer, we should do a good performance and a good result. But after Euro feels right to stop. Someone else takes over. It’s time for me to do something else.
Did you have any contact with the players before the decision?
– I have only had contact with a player and it was with Zlatan last night after PSG match because he is my captain. So he did not have to know it through the media. But our talk between us. In any case, from my side.
Association: We are very satisfied
The Swedish Football Association chairman Karl-Erik Nilsson also praises
– We respect Eric’s decision. If we look back so we went to Euro 2012, came second in the World Cup qualifying group behind Impossible Germany and came close to take us to the World Cup in Brazil in the play-offs and now we are in the European Championships in France in 2016. We are very pleased with it and now we hope this summer’s European Championship finals will also be something special.
What Erik Hamrén come to do after EM is unclear.
– We’ll see. It depends on what comes up. I still have a craving to keep on with football but if nothing interesting turns up I do not mind taking a break either. I have not closed any doors, either for the national team and club football. READ ALSO Banking: This summer takes seven years of roller-coaster-ride the final
