– Not a dream result, then it is, we wished that we could have a goal, says Markus Rosenberg Radiosporten on the phone from Austria.
Weak defense game in the final minutes may be fatal, even if the MFF will surely focus on judgments stake.
After taking further towards Latvian Ventspils and Czech Sparta Prague came Malmö FF last year to Austria for meeting with Salzburg in the first match in the final qualifying round for the Champions League group stage.
Ninety minutes later, the Swedish champions certainly created some dangerous chances – but also to a large extent been taken place. But through Emil Forsberg’s late 1-2 Reduction came MFF away scot, and was a foundation for the return at home.
What then happened is well known. Malmo FF 3-0 ran over Salzburg and became the first Swedish team in 14 years to get to the big money the group stage for meetings with Juventus, Atlético Madrid and Olympiakos.
A year later it was time again. After a total of 1-0 against Zalgiris Lithuania were Malmo FF again to Salzburg, but this time in the third qualifying round.
Missing Soriano
much of the pre-talk about that there is largely a new MFF – only Anton Tinnerholm, Enoch Kofi Adu and Markus Rosenberg was left from last year’s meeting – so state the equivalent of the Austrian champion. Salzburg also got to manage without superstar, the team captain and top scorer Jonathan Soriano who late were forced to throw in the towel.
Two things were clear during the match. Malmo FF is not as sharp as a year ago. Salzburg, it is not.
But just like when it was the home side who had the pressure and the most chances, even if the quality was inferior.
Markus Rosenberg did have the ball in the net after quarter but was properly avvinkad for offside. Instead, it was Salzburg who took the lead early in the second half.
A quick total area spliced by Christoph Leitgeb Andreas Ulmer – who with his left foot then placed the ball behind Johan Wiland, via both crossbar and post .
was punished
Salzburg met since both the bar and the post, but the game looked to end 1-0.
Then some of Malmo fateful moment. First sloppy defending by Felipe Carvalho who caused the penalty that Martin Hinteregger then knocked home the 2-0.
MFF players protested and made it no less when Nikola Đurđić shortly thereafter went bust in the offensive penalty without getting more than a point with him.
The late reduction from last year never came.
A reversal is again a must for Malmo at home on 5 August. The question is whether this year’s MFF is capable of it.
Malmo FF progressed from the second qualifying round for the Champions League group stage after a total of 1-0 against
Zalgiris Lithuania.
The winner of the MFF and Salzburg in the third round go on to the final qualifying round, the loser will play the qualifiers to the Europa League group stage.
The draw for the final qualifying round for the CL group stage takes place August 7. Matches played 18 to 19 August and 25-26 August. The loser will play in the Europa League.
