Donald Berglund started with athletics during the golden Swedish era in the early 2000s, but was becoming a hockey player instead. At the JEM in Eskilstuna, he is strong medal candidate in the 800 meters.

Andreas Almgren broke through with a bang at the Junior European Championships in Eugene last year.

A Swedish took the bronze in the 800 meters in a world championship at this level was sensational.

But just behind

Andreas came another Swedish. Donald Berglund became namely seventh in the Junior World Championship final.

And for this year JEM up to 19 years, which begins on Thursday in Eskilstuna, Kalle not only Sweden-runner of all time in age group, he is also second in Europe for years.

The 19-year-old from Blekinge, vying for the tramway, set his new personal record in the Team Championship for the Russian Cheboksary during midsummer.

His 1.46,85 then placed him sixth in the race against very strong European senior competition. It also handed the second place in Europe among the competitors he is up against in Eskilstuna.

Only Russian Konstantin Tolokonnikov have been faster this year with a time just over four tenths better than Kalles.

Sweden’s latest rising star of 800 meters looking forward to a championship at home.

– I hope in a very public and it will be fighting for medals. The championship is organized in Sweden means that we will not have to travel and therefore less wear on the body, says Donald, who started with athletics inspired by all the big Swedish success in the early 2000s.

Still, he held on to become hockey players.

Until 2012 he played in Olofström and was the season so well that he played in of bleaching TV pucklag. He has also been on the squad training even if there were no games in the Tre Kronor-shirt.

But now it’s only athletics governing Donald, who inspired us that there are so many Swedish runners the talented right now.

– We pushes each other and it gives good competition.

Why do you think so many good young runners will arrive right now?

– I think it’s a coincidence that it is precisely in the running, but there were many of us who started with athletics during the golden generation in the early 2000s.

Donald has been joined by another 44 active Swedes JEM squad and although he is Europe Second in the year, there is a teammate who tops the statistics.

Javelin thrower Simon Litzell tops seasonal best list with 78.73.
