Serena Williams pulls out of the Swedish Open – Aftonbladet

Today was a nightmare news for all tennis fans in Bastad.

World number one Serena Williams is armbågsskadad and withdraws from the tournament.

– Thank you are so understanding. I always feel so much support here and hope I can come back, ‘she says in TV4 Sport.

Serena Williams today would play round of the Swedish Open .

But just before the game gave the world number one told that she was damaged and forced to withdraw from the tournament, which she won in 2013.

The 33-year-old told me that was injured during a training in the morning and it was about the elbow, as she previously had problems with.

– I love playing here in Bastad and always feel so welcome. When I practiced this morning I hurt my elbow. The doctors said it was best to interrupt and not make it worse, she says TV4 Sports broadcast.

“Devastated”

Williams won her first match against Belgian qualifier Ysaline Bonaventure easy in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.

But the crowd that had gathered at center court to see the American take on Klara Koukalova, was instead Swedish hope Johanna Larsson stepping onto the track just minutes later his meeting with Anna-Lena Friedsam in last week’s quarter-finals.

– I’m devastated that I have to retire, says Williams.

– Hopefully I will be back here some day. I’m very happy here and love my fans. I always feel so much support. Thank you for being so understanding, she says.
