It was a thrilling evening in front of their televisions in Edmonton. But in the end, thanks to Brazil, could the Swedish squad exhale.
Sweden is in quarter.
– It’s probably the worst I’ve gone through in my entire career. Terrible, said a relieved Therese Sjögran.
Sweden had after his 1-1 match three lifelines that could save the continued World Cup games. When England beat Colombia in the early game (22.00 Swedish time) were lifelines down to two in number:
Either that Brazil defeated or drew 0-0 against Costa Rica.
or that the match between South Korea ended in a draw.
With just over ten minutes remains of the matches were, it was 0-0 between Brazil and Costa Rica – and 1-1 between Spain and South Korea. Two dream result for the Swedish part. But when did South Korea 2-1, and suddenly Sweden only a Costa Rica-goal from being sent home from the World Cup.
But instead Fernandes stepped forward and put 1-0 to Brazil in the 83 minute. Brazil then held tight and after a nail-biting evening in front of their televisions in the hotel room could be the Swedish team noted that it is in round, after all.
– We saw it in a room, most of them anyway, all did not fit. And as the game played out … it was damn hard work, says Therese Sjögran after that everything was ready.
She was, like entire Swedish squad, mentally exhausted, but enormously relieved.
– It was going to take the feeling we had. It is so vulnerable. Everything was hanging by a thread, but it fixed itself, says Sjögran.
When the match was over, broke the joy scenes out of the hotel in Edmonton’s outskirts.
– It was chaos, people jumped in beds. It was a great feeling
Sweden meets Germany in Ottawa on Saturday, 22:00 Swedish time. And after several times having just lost against Germany in major championships – finals 2003 is the most memorable example, semifinals 2013 the latest – as has Sweden revenge to exact.
– They will always stand in the way, so it’s better to take them early. We have nothing to lose, just go in and go, says Sjögran.
Caroline Seger also met the press after the final whistle.
– It has been very much emotions today, up and down, and it sat deep. Really deep. You can yourself imagine how hard it has been. It is nice that it is clear, says the team captain, who notes that Sweden is restored to the favorite Germany.
– What should we do more than like state? We have been given a second chance and it is important for us to enjoy this opportunity and go in and do a hundred … two hundred and ten percent in the game.
And chances are, says Seger.
– It takes a great performance from our side, but to bring in your luggage that we won against them in the Algarve is important. We scored four goals in them, so it goes. They have respect for us, she says.
– They have the most pressure on them. We have slipped in on a banana and they are one in the group. I do not think they are quite pleased to meet us.
