OTTAWA. More than a place in the World Cup quarter-finals at stake tonight against Germany.
In case of loss, it is thanks and farewell to Therese Sjögran – and perhaps Pia Sundhage.
– I would tremble like a leaf if I thought so, said Sundhage.
It’s not only a prestigious meeting – a battle for a place in the World Cup -slutspelets quarterfinals at stake.
Also: loser miss all appearances Rio Olympics in 2016.
And in addition: a generation of football icons disappear when the World Cup is over, both in Sweden in Germany. In the Swedish camp makes Therese Sjögran and Charlotte Rohlin his last championship.
In Germany, it is clear that the national coach Silvia Neid, who has been part of the German national team since 1996, will leave his post sometime this year. The deputy Steffi Jones is already appointed, and possibly takes place the change after the World Cup is over.
Before ödesmatchen took Pia Sundhage this opportunity to pay tribute to Silvia Neid, who have won the European Cup as a player and World Cup (2007) as coach .
– I’m very impressed by her track record, both as a player and coach. It is absolutely hysterical how
Therese Sjögran was incredibly relieved Thursday when it was clear that she gets one more match in which to try to end nicely. 212 internationals will be 213 during Saturday evening.
Pia Sundhages part, the future is not secure. She has a contract until 2016 – but has been told Sport Express that she is hesitant that she may continue if it does not carry further than the quarterfinals.
– I have not had time to think about anything else than Germany she says now.
– What happens after the Germany match remains to be seen. I have a contract until 2016, then it depends on how the Football Association looks at it. But if I think about it now I tremble like a leaf of the press. I think midfield, fyrbackslinje and goals, said Sundhage.
