Canada won the premiere before a record audience – Aftonbladet

There were hard inside. But through a penalty in injury time could Canada decide the World Cup premiere for the 53 000 people in the stands.

The Hero?

Christine Sinclair, who set their 154th country fights.

Sold in Edmonton meant record in landslagssammanghang in all sports in Canada. And the audience saw an intense first half where both teams lined up chances.

China’s Wang Lisi took a free kick that grazed the post extremely close cross – and then move into the second pillar.

Shortly afterwards Josée Bélanger thundered a shot hard into the bar for Canada.

But it would take until the 91st minute before the goal came after a much more static second half where China stood up well against the favorite.

“I can understand that she blows”

In a duel of added time were Adriana Leon down by Zhao Rong, and the referee pointed to the penalty spot.

– The arm comes up very strange and the referee standing near. I can understand that she blows, says Hanna Marklund in TV4.
Penalties proposed by the 32-year-old Christine Sinclair – the coolest way. The ball went low and touched the pole root before it went into the net to the cheers of the audience crazy.

– It’s amazing. Sinclair was not super in the game – and be able to step forward in this situation shows that she is mentally strong, said Marklund in TV4.
