Six Russian athletes to have extorted for their doping offenses would be silenced. International Athletics Federation’s former president, Lamine Diack is suspected of having received corresponding to approximately SEK 10 million in 2011 to hide the Russian doping, said France’s financial prosecutors on Thursday.
The 82-year-old Senegalese Diack, who was succeeded by Sebastian Coe in summer , was arrested in France earlier this week. He is released on bail, but forbidden to leave the country. His sons, Pape Massata and Khalil, is also reported to have been involved in extortion, but the family turn down.
“The next few days will prove how insignificant these surreal accusations are,” said the family in a statement Reuters.
The Russian Association of Athletics Federations, also suspected to be involved, saying that they have nothing to fear in the latest in a series of scandals that are shaking the athletics world.
