Sepp Blatter remains as FIFA president – Radio Sweden

The vote on who will become the next FIFA president has been followed with excitement, and just now it became clear that none of the candidates received two-thirds of the votes was required. But instead of a second round announced challenger Prince Ali that he jumps off. Thus seated Sepp Blatter remained as chairman of Fifa.

During the International Football Federation (FIFA) Congress in Zurich have first vote on who should become president just ended. In this vote was required two-thirds majority, which would mean 140 of 209 votes. In the first round, the favorite Sepp Blatter 133 votes, while challenger Prince Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan had 73.

This meant that there would be a second round to elect a president. But shortly after the election results were compiled, announced Prince Ali his defection. Which means that Sepp Blatter will join his fifth term as Chairman of FIFA.

– The first feeling is a certain disappointing that there was a change of president as we liked. On the other hand, it is a clear indication where more than a third of FIFA’s member states had wanted to see another Fifa president. So somehow they still have to deal with this result and reflect and think about what the next step will be. Above all it’s about greater openness and transparency, it is primarily the part that is important for us, says Karl-Erik Nilsson, President of the Swedish Football Association.

There have been a few tumultuous days of the football world when seven senior football leaders were arrested in a luxury hotel of Swiss police in Zurich on Wednesday on suspicion of various forms of corruption and money laundering.

On behalf of the US authorities, the US Attorney Loretta Lynch in the lead, has a study been done to look at, among other things, the choice of South Africa to host men’s World Cup in 2010. Lynch also claimed that the corruption scandal has been going on for “more than two decades.”

Corruption is not just about the past World Championships . Swiss authorities began in the spring of

an investigation, together with FIFA to explore how the choices of host countries for the World Cup 2018 (Russia) and 2022 (Qatar) agreed to.

When news of the corruption scandal came out was heard several voices, including from the European UEFA, who requested that Sepp Blatter should resign. Blatter himself is not suspected of any crime and everything has nevertheless indicated that Blatter could re-election, despite UEFA’s support for the challenger Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan and the last days detection of bribery and corruption scandals.

– Blatter usually get enough votes from Africa, Asia and South America, and with that he takes home the whole game again, says former UEFA chairman Lennart Johansson at the Swedish Radio.

It’s been a turbulent Fifa Congress and there were also other issues on the agenda. Among other things, had Palestine Football Association filed a motion to exclude Israel from FIFA. In a speech just prior to exercise voting announced, however, Jibril Rajoub, president of the Palestinian Football Association, that he let the proposal. This is because several representatives from other national federations asked him to withdraw the motion.

The drama around the Congress did not stop there, without going steadily throughout the day. At noon came the alarm about a bomb threat made against the Congress and the entire building was evacuated. And outside there were demonstrations, including the football World Cup in Qatar in 2022, and the large amounts of workers who died during construction of stadiums.
